Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Competency Practice Exam

The term Behavior Chain refers to how certain actions or behaviors are linked together in a sequence, where each behavior serves as a cue for the next behavior in the chain. This concept highlights the interconnection of behaviors, illustrating how the completion of one action leads to the performance of another. For example, in a task such as brushing teeth, the chain might start with picking up the toothbrush, which cues putting on toothpaste, followed by the actual brushing motion, and then rinsing. Each of these steps depends on the previous one, forming a cohesive sequence that must be followed to complete the overall task successfully.

The other options misrepresent the concept; the total number of behaviors a student can exhibit does not define a behavior chain, nor does it specifically address the linked nature of the behaviors. While the individual steps taken to complete a task may relate to the chain, they do not encapsulate the entirety of how those behaviors connect. Lastly, a reinforcement schedule focuses on the timing and frequency of rewards rather than the sequence of behaviors themselves, thus not applicable to the definition of a behavior chain.
